The plate forms part of Hakewill's A picturesque tour of Italy, from drawings made in 1816-1817. The volume was published by John Murray in 1820 and was illustrated with 64 commissioned engravings that were made from Hakewill's drawings.

Both this print and n. 19 show the Salone from opposite ends, so that the row of statues in the centre is seen from each end.
