Publisher considers v. 3-<14> as part of a "new edition" begun in the 1970s and including also v.1-2 of the third edition: "Volumes I and II, only, were published ... in a second edition before it became apparent that the whole history should have been updated. This explains why Volumes I and II of the new edition have to be referred to as 'Third Edition'. Since the other volumes had no interim edition they are called 'Second Edition'"--publisher's web site, 2001.

Includes bibliographies and indexes.
