The 40 double-page plates are tipped onto stubs at centerfold. They have descriptive text on rectos of left-hand leaves and a few right-hand versos.

Plates were etched by Giovanni Battista Pittoni and had been previously published by him with title: Praecipua aliquot Romanae antiquitatis ruinarum monimenta (Venice, 1561). Most plates are signed by Pittoni, and many are dated 1581 (altered from 1561). Plate 8 is not signed at all, and differs from the rest in that it is engraved, not etched.

Dedication signed by Girolamo Porro and dated Nov. 20, 1581.
